Category:American rock music genresTwo neural developmental processes--fasciculation and pruning--provide the brain with a mechanism for the structural and functional segregation of the nervous system. Fasciculation consists of a transient network of outgrowing fibers originating at the tips of neurites and maintained by repetitive firing. Pruning consists of a permanent weakening of synapses in the process of developing brain circuitry. Little is known about the mechanisms of action of these two processes. I will pursue studies of fasciculation in the developing neuromuscular junction (NMJ) using the neuromuscular synapse of the frog and the NMJ of the mouse, both of which exhibit fasciculation during their development. The NMJ is ideally suited for these studies because the contractile apparatus is readily visible and can be studied in many of its morphological details.
